Culture Shock...

So, it has been a while since my last post. I apologize. My only explanation is that I believe that Michael and I are now into the full swing of culture shock. All of the different aspects of the Chinese culture that used to be new and exciting for me to post about are starting to feel overwhelming. Michael has been affected in the same way with work culture too. Don't worry, this is completely natural, and we have been prepared to expect and recognize signs and symptoms of the negative effects of culture shock. At this time we are concentrating on focusing on the positive aspects of our situation so we can get through these difficult, but temporary, feelings of sadness, anxiety, and frustration. We appreciate your support, and it has been great to be able to keep in touch with you all via this blog, email, and Skype! Thank you!!

We have also both recently read a good book about culture shock called the Survival Kit for Overseas Living, which was given to us by a fellow American student in our weekly Mandarin classes. It was quite helpful. The funny thing is: when we eventually return to the States, we will be going through this culture shock all over again! Weird!

Hopefully you will be able to read this diagram. It is a succinct explanation of expatriate culture shock. If not, try following this link:

  1. How can we help?
Now we have a better idea on what to pray about.
Remember, you may be far away from us, but you are as close to the Father as you ever were!
